Where to hang your dartboard

Apart from hanging your dartboard where you have a good combination of space, light and non-fragile objects, its placement will determine how often, how long and how well you practice. And therein lie the keys to fulfilling your true dart throwing potential, young Grasshopper.

We asked Aussie ex-professional darts player Wayne Weening to give us his tips for the best place to hang your practice dartboard, and here’s what he had to say. “Over many years of playing I have been asked to help set up a board for practice purposes in people’s homes or sheds. The first question I’ll ask them is where they would like it. And then together – more often than not – we would find another, more suitable location.” 

“I’ve had friends who have asked me to put the board up in a spare room down the back of the house, against my advice. Then months later I ask them how their practice is going and they reply with, ‘Yeah, umm haven’t really had much of a chance to practice, I’ve been too busy’. My personal preference is to put the board up in the room you would spend most of your time in and, one that you’d feel most comfortable in.”

There are other practical and logistical considerations too, of course. Like, the room you play in needs to be big enough so you can not only stand at the oche (throw line), but to be able to approach it as well. Other things to consider would be the safety of others in the area, e.g.; you wouldn’t hang the board on the back of a door that gets a high volume of use, or on the wall next to that door way.   Even if you are standing in the lounge or the kitchen having a coffee, it’s a start.   It won`t be long before you’re getting keener to spend extra time on that beloved Bandit dartboard.

Practice doesn’t just involve throwing darts at the board but it should also be about practicing your approach and practicing your mental application. More about that later..
